Window & door restoration
We restore historic windows and doors using traditional methods and materials that preserve the building’s character and extend the life of its original joinery.

Window restoration is one of the cornerstones of our workshop. We have a dedicated team specialising in the restoration of historic windows and doors, combining traditional craftsmanship with carefully selected materials to preserve the architectural character of each building. In most cases, restoring original windows is both a more sustainable and a more cost-effective solution than replacing them.
We follow established conservation principles, treating every window individually according to its condition and historic significance. All windows are painted by hand using traditional linseed oil paint and glazed with linseed oil putty. Whenever possible, we preserve the original glass, as historic glass is an essential part of a building’s character and is often of exceptional quality. Where replacement is necessary, we keep both drawn and mouth-blown glass in stock to ensure an authentic restoration.
Where appropriate, we can also improve thermal performance without compromising the building’s historic appearance. One option is the installation of vacuum-insulated glazing in the inner sash, providing significantly improved energy efficiency while preserving the original exterior. This solution is particularly suitable for heritage buildings and historic entrance doors.
Every project begins with a thorough condition survey to assess the windows or doors and determine the necessary restoration work. Based on this assessment, we prepare a detailed work specification and cost estimate, giving property owners a clear understanding of the required work and allowing projects to be prioritised or completed in phases where appropriate.
Before restoration begins, every sash is carefully documented and measured. In most cases, the window sashes are removed and transported to our workshop, where the restoration is carried out under controlled conditions. Repairs to the window frames are completed on site while the sashes are being restored.
During the restoration period, the window openings are protected with weather-resistant temporary screens that continue to admit natural daylight into the building. The window sashes are typically away from the property for approximately three weeks, including the necessary drying time for the linseed oil paint.
By combining traditional craftsmanship, specialist knowledge and conservation best practices, we restore historic windows and doors for generations to come while preserving the architectural integrity and cultural heritage of every building.
